PERIOD 101 ! 👯‍♀️

A period is when a girl bleeds from her vagina for a few days. Period is caused by changes in hormones in the body. Every month, your body prepares for pregnancy. if no pregnancy occurs, the uterus sheds it lining. The menstrual blood is partly blood and partly tissue from inside the uterus. It passes out of the body through the vagina.




Do period happen all the time?


For most girls period happens every 28 days or so but it's still normal for periods to happen more or less frequent than this.


Normal menstrual cycle can range from 21 to 40 days.


How long do periods last?


Period duration can range between 3 to 8 days but on average it will usually last for about 5 days. The bleeding tends to be heaviest in the first 2 days.


Every girls have different cycle, remember that everybody is unique !


How much blood do I lose?


It might seem scary at first seeing your body loosing blood, but do not worry! On average you'll lose about 5 to 12 teaspoons of blood during your period, although some bleed more heavy than this.


Can I get pregnant?


Yes, as soon as your period starts your hormone is activated so you can get pregnant through sexual intercourse. This hormone an lead to ovulation meaning your body is now able to carry a baby inside.


So do not worry, you won't magically be pregnant our of nowhere but if you are sexually active, do not forget to practice safe sex!


Will I have period for the rest of my life?


You will have periods until you reach menopause. When women reach menopause ( around age 45-55), their periods will permanently stop. Women also won't have period while they are pregnant.



Should I watch for any problems?


Remember to always consult a parent or a doctor for medical advices.

  • are 15 and haven't started period

  • have had period for more than 2 years and it does not come regularly

  • have period that lasts for more than a week

  • have severe PMS or cramps that gets in the way of your everyday activities

  • have bleeding in between period

  • have very heavy bleeding ( bleeding that use up pads or tampons faster than every 1 hour)


What should my blood colour be?


When your period is at its heaviest, the blood will be red. On lighter days, it may be pinkish, brown or black.
